Archaeologists have found bones and bits and bobs in a sarcophagus from what could be a King at Lincoln Castle.
It turns out that this is rather exciting and new and interesting, the news has been attracting international attention. In fact, it has reached the point that if you google “lincoln castle saxon king” then you get some articles from national newspapers and stuff. I mean, look, this is jolly exciting.
One commenter on The Lincolnite web article described it as “a rare find indeed”, while another summed up the whole situation by saying “Nice one”.
You’re probably wondering what Mary Powell, Tourism Development Manager at Lincolnshire County Council had to say about all these shenanigans, well, it’s a good job we went and got a quote from her then, isn’t it?
“…extensive archaeological digs have been undertaken and in one, a previously unknown Saxon church was found including a number of burials and a stone sarcophagus. To find an undisturbed, monolithic sarcophagus is unprecedented in England and is of national significance. An endoscopic survey has revealed that it does contain a skeleton. The sarcophagus which is 3m below ground level has proved very challenging to remove, not helped by the very heavy rain. The archaeological team are now heading into the fourth week of working on its extraction.”
Well this all sounds very exciting doesn’t it?
Very informative, well written piece. Keep up the good work!
