PRISM Review

When I first heard that Katy Perry’s intentions with this new album was to create something with “darker elements” than her other works, which means presumably she’s stopped spraying whipped cream from her breasts, I wondered what the result would be.

The album is definitely not typical Katy Perry, so those of you who wanted a continuation of classic Katy Perry, with elements of fun, hints of sexuality and some really big pop “BANGERZ” (we know, wrong artist, but appropriate anyway), you will be somewhat disappointed.

This doesn’t mean that the album is completely terrible, it just seems as though those who are true Katy fans will still enjoy it, whereas those who liked her for her slightly trashy europop will probably prefer the old Katy. The album just seems to be full of those songs which were slower and not as catchy from her old albums.

There’s also a really cringey bit within the last 30 seconds of “This Is How We Do” where she says “What? Wait, no no no no, bring the beat back, that’s right”, and that is truly a low, low point of the whole album.

There’s also a weird airline safety announcement in “International Smile”, done in a British accent. The irony is that it says “We’re approaching the runway, so get ready for takeoff”. This is an odd thing to say, especially as the plane is presumably already taxiing.

There’s nothing wrong with the album, it’s still feel-good pop courtesy of Ms Perry, you’ll just be amazed at how similar all the songs sound.
