I had the utter joy of seeing this film just before Christmas, and let me say, if you liked the first one, you’ll love this new rendition.
In some ways, they’ve made it better than the original, and in other ways it’s still a childish comedy which could do so much better.
Ron Burgundy et al. move to New York to pursue a career at “GNN” (don’t let the name fool you, the entire film in fact parodies the right-wing Fox News channel, it’s not supposed to be CNN at all). After encountering their black female boss (which seems to cause the group of four some difficulties), the entire movie seems to then spend it’s time making occasional, and just on the line, race jokes.
Ron Burgundy’s cry of “How difficult is it for a successful white man to get a taxi in this city?!” confirms this fact. Most people I was seeing the film with thought that it had overstepped the mark, however, living in the States for the year, I can tell you that their media is filled with this kind of thing. They have the opinion that if it’s done in jest, it’s fine. How American.
The character of Brick is much better formed, and he gets a girlfriend, whom he takes on a date to “the best soda machine in the whole of New York city”, classic Brick.
So overall a good movie, if you liked the original, you’ll like this new, updated version of absurd and crude humour.
What does Ron think of all this?
“WE’RE GOING TO HAVE INTERRACIAL SEX”, he yells at his boss at one point.
Hmmm.
