If you’ve seen the new John Lewis advert, you’ll have heard Lily Allen’s nice new cover of Somewhere Only We Know.
But there’s more.
A couple of days ago she unveiled her brand new song, Hard Out Here.
It’s pretty safe to say this video isn’t lacking in subtlety.
Several women are seen twerking whilst smoking, pouring wine down each other’s behinds, and generally acting like 12 year old chavs in a play park on a Friday night.
There’s also a very delightful little scene when where one of the dancers is randomly licking a bottle of alcohol whilst another is making suggestive hip movements at a car…
But there’s method to this madness. Lily is making her comeback by parodying artists like Robin Thicke and Miley Cyrus, who she believes are objectifying women with their music. She even makes an ever so slightly grim reference to her lady bits to hit back at Thicke, who you guessed it, did the same thing about his manhood (but apparently he wasn’t being humorous. Apparently.) in his Blurred Lines…cheeky!
She’s very clever about this, and her lyrics completely smash the ball of sexism back at those she’s mimicking.
Even if slightly intentional, the song is let down by severe auto tune in the chorus. Lily has a great voice naturally and it’s not needed.
What’s annoying is it would probably be really good if it wasn’t so robotic. It’s still really catchy though – a grower, if you like. It’s hard to tell how well this song will do; it’s great, but it seems more like it might be popular for it’s meaning and blunt humour rather than its sound.
