Second Star To The Left Review

As you may already know, throughout the Christmas period Lincoln and That are reviewing all the best Christmas films (yes, ALL the BEST Christmas films).

After a long search on YouTube I came across what I was searching for. Second Star to the Left is a film I vaguely remember from being about eight or nine. All I can remember was that it involved a rabbit, guinea pig and hamster who had to deliver a present.

The film itself is only 29 minutes long, so I decided to sit down and see if young Alice had good taste. It turns out it wasn’t too bad…

How To Tackle Steep Hill

A street sign for Steep Hill, on the side of a cafe at the top. Also displays the Best Street award.

Those familiar with Lincoln will know the sinking feeling (no, not the song by the ‘the the’) you get when someone, usually a newbie, mentions popping up Steep Hill to look at pretty buildings (apparently there’s a cathedral and castle up there or something, you might not have heard of it).

The clever person was who called it Steep Hill was pretty accurate, and quite frankly, they deserve a round of applause. So here’s how the lovely people of Lincoln get up Steep Hill without dying. Continue reading

Our Favourite Spam Comments Of The Year So Far

Some WordPress comments.

It’s been about ten weeks since we started this project, and in that time, being a WordPress blog, we’ve accumulated some fantastic spam comments.

Unfortunately, if you’ve ever managed a WordPress blog, you’ll know that this is just a fact of life, but we do have some personal favourites here at Lincoln & That. It’s fortunate that WordPress is so very good at removing these.

Here are a number of unrelated information, nonetheless really really worth taking a your time to visit this website

That was a comment on our Doctor Who post.

The weblog You have create is very nicely composed and very informative many thanks for good posta?|

This is another “banger”, we particularly like the Italian enthusiasm and flair which starts on the last word. If only this could have been longer. That was on this post about a tattoo parlour, nonetheless.

Our 2nd place award goes to:

Not too long ago, I didnt give heaps of believed to support leaving observations on web page webpage articles and provide placed opinions even far significantly less. Looking through in your exceptional report, will enable me to do at times

I’m glad we inspired them so much, especially on a post about lights being turned on.

Anyway, our first place goes to:

I must express thanks to the writer for rescuing me from this particular situation. After researching through the world-wide-web and getting tips which were not beneficial, I was thinking my entire life was over. Existing without the presence of strategies to the problems you have resolved as a result of this guideline is a critical case, and the ones that might have negatively damaged my entire career if I hadn’t discovered your web blog. Your own knowledge and kindness in touching a lot of stuff was crucial. I am not sure what I would have done if I hadn’t come upon such a subject like this. I can also now look ahead to my future. Thanks a lot so much for this reliable and amazing guide. I won’t be reluctant to propose the sites to anybody who would like counselling on this issue.

Excellent story, bro.

Lush Stuff From Lush

Pictures of items available from Lush.

A hot bath during winter is one of the most luxurious things. Coming in from the cold at Christmas time and having a good soak surrounded by bubbles. I can’t think of anything better and yes that is the girliest thing I’ve ever said…

Anyway, for those of you that are massive bath fans like myself, Lush’s Christmas collection may just be for you.

What To Expect From Stokes Cafe

a photo of Stokes coffee on the High Street in Lincoln. People are walking past.

Sometimes you might just fancy a taste of the high life, and that could be achieved through a visit to a suave coffee shop.

Stokes Cafe is probably one of the most well known in Lincoln.

There’s actually two Stokes cafes in the city, with the larger of the two set in an old Victorian style building beside the Glory Hole. Whilst you’re often as crammed in there as you might have been in a real Victorian house, it’s actually a lovely venue with a variety of drinks and cakes on offer.

This includes some very traditional English Teas, Scones, and Victoria Sponges; all of which are baked to perfection and taste amazing.

With three floors, the higher rooms provide lovely views of Lincoln. They’re also quite cosy. This isn’t just because the tables and booths are *very* close together to the point where you’re basically sat on your neighbours knees, but also because it generally has a very friendly atmosphere and is decorated in a really cute and homely way.

The company also hold a variety of events at their other, less Victorian cafe in The Collection, including a Christmas themed song session which is due to be held on Saturday.

Whilst it’s safe to say they add to the Victorian experiences with prices that could sometimes send your pockets to the workhouse, it’s definitely worth a visit (but if you’re planning on going on the weekend, you should perhaps read our guide on surviving the weekend’s high street crowds.)

Both venues open daily from 8.30 to 5.00, except on Sundays, when they open at 11.30.

Secret Santa – is it the way forward for Christmas?

picture of me in a strawberry cap next to a penguins game

Yep, it’s that time of the year again. The time where you scrounge every last penny out of your purse for presents for your family and friends.

Secret Santa is something which is becoming more common each year. It’s easier than getting everyone a present and can be quite fun. With Secret Santa, you write everyone’s names on a piece of paper, scrunch them up and randomly pick one. Then you have to buy something for that person without conferring with anyone else.

Polar Bear King Review

A photo showing a polar bear eating an apple.

If you like fairy tales, Christmas films and the best graphics ever, then Polar Bear King might be for you.

This is providing you’ve got a good sense of humour and you’re ready for some utter cringe.

It’s basically your typical fairy tale gone wrong. There’s a princess, a king, and a deranged witch (more of cougar in this case), who is determined to make the king’s life hell because he doesn’t want to marry her. But being a bit of a hipster cougar witch, she decides that instead of turning him into the ‘oh so mainstream’ frog, she’ll make him into a polar bear instead.

But if this seems weird, you’ve seen nothing yet.

Whilst the king is from Summer Land, the princess spends day after day in Winter Land (it’s so original it brings tears to our eyes…) dreaming lustfully of finding her prince whilst her dad talks to crows.

Her dreams come true when the king, who’s now a polar bear, randomly turns up when she’s chilling in the snow one day.

Instead of getting scared, she talks to him and instantly falls in love after discovering the truth. You could call it destiny or love at first sight (or bestiality?) Either way, it’s utterly creepy and the plot moves far too fast. A few minutes later, he basically proposes.

Sadly,  she can’t marry him until the cougar’s spell breaks, which apparently takes a very long time…

To quote the synopsis – ‘will they live happily ever after, or will the jealous witch ruin their plans?’

You’ll have to watch this wonderful, Oscar deserving epic to find out!

Parks and Recreation – A Show Not About Parks

Photo Credit: Kristin Dos Santos via flickr

What a deceptive title, it isn’t all about parks, but it is a little bit.

If you haven’t had chance to see Parks and Recreation yet, you really should.

The comedy stars Tina Fey’s best friend Amy Poehler, and she’s just as good as playing the head of the department in Pawnee, Indiana as Tina Fey is in managing her staff as Liz Lemon from 30 Rock.

The show features the same level of dysfunctional office politics. You also feel from day one as though you are really in on the jokes they exchange in the office. You quickly learn that Jerry is the butt of all office jokes (who has a timeshare in Muncie, IN, much to the amusement of the other staff). Tom starts all the office jokes, and April isn’t as bad really as she first appears.

The story lines always seem to be potential real situations for local councillors everywhere, a lack of funding, lack of public interest, and lack of interest from other councillors. You feel as though this could almost be a real fly on the wall documentary, if it weren’t so funny.

The first series does start poorly, but the second season onwards is where it gets better. The first season is only six episodes (about two hours in total), so still worth watching for all the character introductions.

The show seems to evolve in countless ways, always relevant, and always amusing. If you enjoyed 30 Rock and are still mourning the loss of the show, you will definitely love Parks and Recreation.

It’s also available on BBC Four, which 30 Rock isn’t, how distressing.
